How to Use Listing Management?

Webayt List Management in a CMS is used to manage content lists used on the front end of a website. Content, forms, modules, or defined data within a theme can be prepared as lists in different languages, and these lists can be quickly used on the front end.
The primary goal of Listing Management is to avoid having to retrieve, reprocess, or re-translate content from the database every time it's displayed to a visitor. This results in more efficient performance and a more controlled translation process on multilingual websites.
What is Listing Management Used For?
List Management enables the preparation of content and data lists created in the Webayt CMS based on language. These lists can be used when displaying content on the front end of the website.
If a list of content exists in the relevant language, the system retrieves the data directly from this list and displays it to the user. This method reduces the need for repeated database queries and the need to re-translate the same content.
Especially on multilingual websites, it's recommended to have a pre-created list structure. This allows content to be presented more quickly and in a more organized manner when the site is viewed in different languages.
How can I access the Listing Management page?
To access the Listing Management page, open the Operational Actions menu from the left menu in the Webayt administration panel and enter the Listing Management area.
Operational Operations → Listing Management
On this page, existing lists can be viewed, new lists can be created based on the selected language and list type, lists can be refreshed, or lists can be deleted if necessary.
Why is Listing Management Important?
When content is listed on the front end of a website, if a ready-made list of that content is not available, the system may have to retrieve the data from the database. If the site is displayed in a different language, the data can be translated into that language and displayed to the user.
This process works; however, it's not a recommended method, especially for multilingual and content-heavy websites, as it requires retrieving data from the database and triggering the translation process every time.
When a list related to List Management is created beforehand, the system retrieves the data directly from the list in the relevant language without having to deal with these configurations, and displays it to the user more quickly.
What is the purpose of Create & Refresh Lists?
The Create & Refresh List button allows you to create a list or refresh an existing list for the selected language and list type.
If a list has never been created before, the system will prepare a new list from the relevant data. If a list has already been created, it can be recreated based on the updated data.
This process is particularly useful when a new list type is added, translation lists need to be prepared, or an existing list needs to be rebuilt with updated data.
What is the purpose of the "Delete List" function?
The Delete List button can be used to delete the list belonging to the selected language and list type.
When a list is deleted, the associated preset list becomes unusable. In this case, when the relevant content is to be listed on the front-end, the system may have to retrieve the data from the database again or, if necessary, run the translation process.
Therefore, before deleting a list, it should be checked whether the list actually needs to be deleted.
What happens if there's no pre-prepared list?
If a ready-made list in the relevant language does not exist for a content or data set, the system can retrieve the necessary data from the database and process it.
If the site is displayed in a language other than the default and a ready-made list for that language is not available, the data is retrieved from the database, translated into the relevant language, and displayed to the user.
This structure ensures the system works; however, repeated translation on multilingual sites is not recommended in terms of both performance and processing costs.
The Advantage of Using a Ready-Made List
Ready lists are pre-prepared versions of content in the relevant language. This allows visitors to access content directly from the ready list when they view the site.
The main advantages of using a ready-made list are as follows:
- Content can be displayed faster on the front end.
- This avoids the need for repeated translation with each viewing.
- Multilingual content management becomes more controlled.
- Database queries and processing load can be reduced.
- Even if the cache is refreshed, a more robust structure can be maintained through the preset list.
What is the difference between this and caching?
Caching can speed up page reloading by storing previously generated output. However, the list structure is a pre-prepared data source for content based on language.
Even when caching is used, if the relevant ready-made list is not found, the system can retrieve data from the database again when the cache is refreshed and perform the translation process if necessary.
Therefore, instead of relying solely on caching for multilingual content, it's recommended to create relevant lists. Listing management ensures that content is kept organized in the relevant language.
How to use the List Editing Popup?
When you work on a list on the List Management page , the List Editing popup may open. This popup displays the list's content based on language.
The left side displays different language options belonging to the same list. The right side displays the list fields for the selected language.
This area can be used specifically to review translated content and make changes to editable fields as needed.
Why can't the site language list be edited?
The list cannot be edited in the List Editing popup if it's in the site language. This is because the content in that language is considered source data.
Site language content must be updated from the respective content or module's own editing page in the panel. In Listing Management, the site language list is only viewable; it cannot be edited directly.
This structure is used to maintain consistency between the source content and the list data.
Which fields can be edited in other languages?
Only fields that have been translated in languages other than the site language can be edited. Technical or common fields that have not been translated cannot be changed in the list editing popup.
This is because non-translated fields need to remain the same in all languages. For example, the order, record ID, certain technical values, or common system fields must be consistent across all lists.
Therefore, editing only textual and translatable fields is allowed in different language lists.
How to Use Defined JSON Files in Listing Management?
JSON files added to the defined folder located under the theme folder can also be created as lists in all languages via List Management.
These files are typically used for defined text or fixed content values within a theme. List Management allows these definitions to be prepared and managed for different languages.
All fields in the JSON files under the `Defined` folder are considered translated fields. Therefore, these fields can be edited in language lists other than the site language.
The defined list in the site language is also considered source data and therefore cannot be directly edited through the Listing Management system.
What happens to the list when content is added, updated, or deleted?
When new content is added to a created content group, when existing content is updated, or when content is deleted, the relevant list is automatically updated.
So once a list is created, changes within that content group are tracked by the system, keeping the list up-to-date.
This ensures that lists remain up-to-date without having to manually refresh them after each operation during content management.
When Should Listing Management Be Used?
Listing management should be used especially on multilingual websites and in structures where content is frequently listed on the front end.
Creating or updating a list may be useful in the following situations:
- If content lists are to be prepared for a new language
- If a ready-made list is to be created for a specific module or content group
- If you don't want to re-translate multilingual content
- If the goal is to display content faster on the front end.
- If a language-based list is to be prepared for theme-defined JSON files
- If the existing lists need to be recreated with updated data
What to Consider When Using Listing Management?
Listing management is a critical area for front-end performance and multilingual content management. Therefore, listing creation, updating, or deletion processes should be handled carefully.
- Before creating the list, make sure the correct language is selected.
- Check that you have selected the correct list type.
- Remember that pre-made lists help prevent the need for re-translation.
- Please note that the lists in the site language cannot be edited directly.
- Note that in other languages, only the translated fields can be edited.
- Before deleting a list, check if that list is already in use on the front-end.
- Keep in mind that in defined JSON files, all fields are considered translated fields.
- Please note that the system will keep the relevant list up-to-date with content additions, updates, and deletions.
Summary
Listing Management is an operational management area in the Webayt CMS that enables the creation of language-based lists of content and some theme definitions.
Thanks to pre-configured lists, content can be displayed faster on the front end, repeated translations can be avoided, and the multilingual site structure can be managed more effectively.
Lists in the site language are considered source data and cannot be edited. In other languages, only the translated fields can be edited. For defined JSON files under the theme, all fields are considered translated fields, and lists can be created for these files in all languages.
